Children’s Emergency Shelter
The Children’s Emergency Shelter provides short-term care and assistance for children ages birth through 17 years. Services include protective placement for children who need shelter to ensure their safety and well-being; transitional shelter stays for children awaiting other placement; and a safe haven for runaway and homeless youth.
While in shelter care, a child’s educational, social and recreational needs are met as part of the daily programming. Group counseling sessions are held regularly to enhance the children’s understanding of their circumstances and to improve their problem solving and coping skills.
Whenever possible children attend school at their home school. Children who cannot attend their home school due to distance or for other reasons are provided educational services in the Shelter classroom. The Shelter classroom is run by the Iowa Area Education Agency and provides individual instruction based on the child’s age, grade and ability level.
Shelter services are available by referral from the Iowa Department of Human Services, Juvenile Court Services or law enforcement organizations.
The Children’s Emergency Shelter operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
